Choosing curtains seems simple—until you have to decide exactly where they should end.
Should they stop just above the floor? Touch it? Or create a soft puddle of fabric?
The right curtain length can make a room feel taller, cleaner, and more finished. The wrong length can make even beautiful curtains look awkward.
Here’s how to choose the right look for your space.
WHY — Curtain Length Changes the Entire Look of a Room
Curtains take up a large amount of visual space, especially in bedrooms and living rooms.
When curtains are too short, they can make the window—and sometimes the entire room—feel smaller. When they are excessively long, they may collect dust or become inconvenient in high-traffic areas.
For most homes, the goal is simple:
Create a polished floor-length look without making everyday use difficult.
That starts with deciding how you want your curtains to meet the floor.
HOW — Choose How Your Curtains Meet the Floor
There are three common ways to style floor-length curtains.
1. Floating Above the Floor
The curtains end slightly above the floor, usually around ½ inch (1–2 cm).
This is one of the most practical choices for everyday spaces.
It works especially well if:
You open and close your curtains frequently
You want easier cleaning
You have pets
You prefer a neat, modern look
The small gap is barely noticeable but helps keep the fabric away from dust and friction.
2. Just Touching the Floor
The curtain hem meets the floor without noticeably folding onto it.
This creates a clean, tailored appearance and works beautifully in bedrooms and living rooms.
The downside is that measurements need to be accurate. Even a small measuring difference can make the curtains look slightly too short or too long.
3. Puddling on the Floor
Puddled curtains intentionally extend several inches beyond the floor so the extra fabric gathers at the bottom.
This creates a softer, more dramatic look and can work especially well with luxurious or romantic interiors.
However, puddled curtains require more maintenance and may not be ideal for rooms with pets, children, or frequent foot traffic.
WHAT — Which Curtain Length Should You Choose?
For most homes, floor-length curtains that either float slightly above the floor or just touch it are the safest choices.
Choose floating curtains if practicality and easy maintenance matter most.
Choose floor-touching curtains if you want a clean, tailored finish.
Choose puddled curtains if you want a more decorative, luxurious effect and don’t mind the extra maintenance.
Measure Before You Buy
Before choosing a curtain length, measure from the point where your curtain rod will sit—not simply from the top of the window.
For a taller, more spacious appearance, curtain rods are often positioned above the window frame.
Then measure vertically to the floor.
Also check the exact dimensions listed on the product page before ordering. Curtain lengths can vary between styles and manufacturers.
Don’t Forget Curtain Width
Length gets most of the attention, but width matters too.
Curtains usually look better when the total fabric width is wider than the window itself. This allows the panels to create natural folds instead of hanging completely flat when closed.
